Top 2011 Pistols - Staccato XL Competition 2011 This rapid cycling competition straight shooting 9mm with extended scope radius is perfect for action pistol competition and tactical games
At 38 ounces, the Staccato XL meets all divisional weight limits for USPSA, Steel Challenge and IDPA rules.
Top 2011 Pistols
John Browning's classic 1911 design remains a force in the action pistol competition, but it saw a significant improvement when STI took the basic design and turned it into a wide-body, high-capacity pistol. Those rifles were extremely popular, and although the STI is now known as the Staccato, the trend continues. At the 2021 USPSA Nationals, the STI and Staccato multiple rifle models were most used by Open Class shooters with 29 percent choosing it, as well as the Limited and L10 with 18 percent choosing it.

The Staccato XL ($3,599, staccato2011.com) is a 2011 full-size pistol that incorporates Staccato's FlaTec recoil-relief system. The all-steel construction results in an empty weight of 38 ounces (sans magazine), which makes all division weight limits for the USPSA, Steel Challenge, and IDPA. The stainless steel barrel is 5.4 inches with a 1:16-inch twist, with a well-shaped feed ramp and recessed muzzle crown. Similar to other 2011 models, the Staccato XL does not use the original barrel bushing and uses a tapered barrel. Front and rear serrations adorn the slide, and a Picatinny rail on the dust cover allows for mounting lights or lasers.

Sights consist of a Dawson Precision front sight in a mount with a replaceable fiber optic rod. A red ribbon is supplied with the gun, but any color can be fitted. The rear sight is a Staccato 2011 T.A.S. adjustable with plain black blade. For those looking to install an aftermarket sight, Dawson Precision has its own optics system ($139.95) that allows the mounting of a number of popular reflex sights.

Operational controls consist of an extended left magazine release, dual extended combat safety mechanisms, and a left side release lever. The G2 grips are well blocked on the front, side, and rear straps, and the enlarged magazine well is big enough that you'd have to be a total incompetent to miss it. Adhesion security has a modest speed.
As for the trigger pull, I measured 2.6 pounds on my digital gauge with a slight lift, clean break and quick recovery.

The Staccato XL comes in a padded soft case with two 17-round magazines, one 20-round magazine, replacement red and white optics, the ubiquitous cable lock, and an instruction manual.

I made a quick tape to grease the gun out of the box. I was surprised at how easy it was to stretch the slider and had to assume it was because of the FlaTec recoil system. Without a barrel bushing, removal is simple: slide the slide back into the witness cutout, pull out the slide stop, and remove the upper unit from the frame. The process is much less complicated than for the 1911.
The main role of the Staccato XL is a smaller caliber rifle (125 power factor), so I wanted to test different bullet weights. Some shooters prefer the softer recoil of a heavier bullet, while others prefer the "fast" recoil of lighter slugs and the feel of getting them back on target faster.
For the heavy bullet I used the Federal Sintech 150 grain load, which has proven popular and effective. Lapua's 123-grain FMJ and Remington's 115-grain FMJ made up the mid-weight loads.

Steel Challenge has no power factor and skilled shooters favor the lightest recoil load. For that reason, I included the Atlanta Arms 100-grain FMJ Steel Challenge load. I have never chronographed this load, but from the recoil it produces, there is no way it will make 125 PF. Atlanta Arms notes that some rifles may need a lighter recoil spring for reliable function, and I thought this would be a good test for the Staccato FlaTec recoil system.
For a true "Mouse Puff" load I also included my personal 9mm Steel Challenge load. It's a 125 grain lead DG bullet with enough VihtaVuori N310 to hit 930 fps. and eject the fired cases from the ejection port. The recoil is not much more than a .22 high velocity long rifle pistol load. We Smith & Wesson M&P C.O.R.E. will withstand this load — if cleaned before a match — but many other weapons will not. However, it makes it easier for me to get my copper because everything will be in a neat pile two meters to my right.

After that I went to my backyard and zeroed the rifle at 25 yards with a medium weight Lapua load. It was a little high and straight at first, but the sights came quickly. Next was to check each of the loads, looking not only at nutrition and function, but also at the pattern of ejection.

Federal Sintech, Lapua and Remington standard loads showed strong ejection at about 4.5 feet and about 30 degrees back. The 100-grain Atlanta Arms load kicked out about three feet 30 degrees. My "Mouse Puff" load did the same thing it does in my gun, landing in a neat pile two feet to my right. The Staccato XL doesn't seem to be the least bit sensitive to ammo.
Unable to find a suitable legal holster in my collection for the 5.4-inch barrel, I set up white cutout targets and ran transition drills from the low-ready position at 10 to 20 yards. All three magazines were used, and as usual with a new magazine, it was a little difficult to get a full load into it at first, but it got easier with use.

The gun sprayed right along with all the loads and magazines. Sharp sights and a beautiful trigger made quick hits easy, but what stood out was the lack of muzzle rise and fast cycling. That's not to say there wasn't any muzzle rise, but the gun shot much straighter than I expected—especially with a full factory load. I run these transition drills with the PACT Club timer and have a good feel for what my normal splits are with a semi-auto or revolver. Lighter recoil and faster cycling made the Staccato XL run noticeably faster.
A 2011 Life: Lubrication
Next up is testing the accuracy of my 25 meter shore rest. As the accuracy chart shows, this gun will shoot.
Former Navy SEAL Laurent Picard was one of several experienced shooters impressed by the Staccato XL's straight shooting and fast cycling. Notice that the gun is level on the next target, with the fired case less than 10 inches from the ejection port. (Photo by Chris Christian)
No holster meant no match, so I took the Staccato XL to a Steel Challenge practice day at my local club and rang the low level steel at the ready. I had an ample supply of Remington 115 grains and used them. The Staccato XL caught the attention of other shooters (some in the Grandmaster, Master or A class), who were all eager to try it out. They were as impressed as I was with the flat shooting and fast cycling characteristics. And I was even more impressed when I told them to shoot factory loads at full power.
At this point, there have been over 600 rounds through the gun with nothing more than my original tape and lube, and not a single malfunction of any kind. The Staccato XL 2011 9mm is a worthy addition to an already popular line of pistols.
What Size Handgun Should I Carry?
Accuracy testing was done from the back of a bench with sandbags at 25 meters. Reported group size is the average of three groups of five circles measured center to center in inches.
