However, VAMPIRE is not a drone, but an acronym for L3Harris' new Vehicle-Agnostic Modular Pallet ISR Rocket Equipment System, which is designed to hit ground targets and shoot down low-flying aircraft, especially drones.

Colin Kahl, the Pentagon's deputy defense secretary for policy, described VAMPIRE as a "kinetic system" in an interview with reporters after the latest aid package was first announced, adding that it "essentially uses small missiles to [ unmanned aerial vehicles". VAMPIRE consists of a quadruple launcher for 70mm laser-guided missiles, such as APKWS II, and a WESCAM MX-RSTA or equivalent EO/IR modular sensor ball and laser designator, which can be lifted by a telescopic mast. Independent power supply and centralized control system are also part out of the package. Palletizing systems can be installed in a flatbed or even in a fixed location.

According to L3Harris, VAMPIRE can also be configured with different sensors to better meet end-user needs. This is where the mystery comes in, as the specific VAMPIRE configuration that will be delivered to Ukraine has not yet been revealed.

L3Harris didn't primarily promote VAMPIRE as a C-UAS capability. However, the company makes it clear that VAMPIRE can attack aerial targets such as drones, and a promotional video the company shared (see below) explains that L3Harris' advanced video tracking can lock onto moving targets while allowing MQ-9 Reaper to pass through. The system's manual also clearly states that it can be used to strike air targets, a variant of the TDRS Twin Eagle target drone, also described as a "Group III" unmanned aerial system (UAS), shown as an example. According to the U.S. Army drone classification system, Group 3 drones are unmanned aerial vehicles that have a maximum weight between 56 and 1,320 pounds, can fly at altitudes up to 18,000 feet, and have a top speed of 250 sections or less.
