M&p Ar15 Review - The Sport II is Smith and Wesson's entry-level version of the AR-15. It is basic furnished with a standard Mil-Spec telescoping stock, slim grip without aluminum heat shields, flat upper receiver with Magpul rear sight (BUIS), dust cover, forward assist, and main charging handle. The upper receiver can easily accommodate optics such as a reflex sight or a magnified scope.
At the time of this test, the rifle was in mint condition, unfired, and the rifle was purchased from Buds Gun Shop for an FFL with private funds.

The Sport II uses a stock trigger that has about 6 pounds of trigger pull. The barrel is a standard 16-inch profile barrel with a nitride finish, a 1/9-inch twist rate, and a carbine-length gas system. The rifle comes with an A2 birdcage installed. The sleeve guards do not float freely and are very easy to adjust.

Accuracy testing was done with a 3×9 Primary Arms Duplex scope at maximum magnification with the Primary Arms base mount, at 100 yards using the prone firing position and an improvised rest for support. Test shooting conditions were dry and dusty with winds between 8 and 18 mph. Wolf 55gr .223 steel case, Wolf Gold 55gr .223 brass case, Federal .223 55gr, Winchester M855 5.56mm 62gr with steel penetrator and Federal 77gr 5.56mm Match cartridges were used for testing. Three groups of 5 cartridges were tested with each type of ammunition.
Accuracy with the Sport II was excellent for an entry-level AR-15, with the worst results coming with Winchester 62gr brass ammunition. The best ammo tested with the Sport II was the Federal 77gr Match. While writing this review, no long-term reliability tests were performed, and I did not perform any “tests in extreme conditions such as mud tests, long-term magnesium dumping, snow tests, etc. Under conditions tested with approximately 210 rounds of various quality ammunition and Magpul Gen2 and Gen 3 magazines, the rifle performed reliably and without malfunctions.
The S&W Sport II handles quite nimbly, but is typical of a basic AR-15. The trigger is average. Stock is basic, but sufficient. There are no heat shields on the grips, but for light and slow shooting this does not seem to be a problem.
The Sport II is compatible with most AR-15 accessories and modifications. It does not accept aftermarket triggers, but the rifle has an enlarged trigger guard built into it. There are many modifications that can be attached to the rifle with minimal use of tools. In stock, the rifle can accept accessories including but not limited to; optics, slings, tacks or vertical arms.

However, for a shooter looking to make significant modifications, such as a new barrel, trigger, or other changes to internal components, it would be much more cost-effective to build a rifle from scratch. The M&P 15, like most AR-15s, is chambered in 5.56/.223 and accepts standard M16/M4 magazines. Finally, the barrel has a twist rate of one in nine inches, which means that the twist rate will complete a revolution on nine inches of the barrel. This is ideal for stabilizing 55-grain M193 ammunition, often the cheapest of the .223/5.56 ammunition types.

The M&P 15 shares many of the common features of the AR-15. The upper receiver has a dust cover to prevent dirt and dust from entering the gun, as well as a projectile deflector.
