The AR-15 rifle is perhaps the most popular series of American rifles in half a century. A proven, mature design, standard feature set, and military-style cachet during two land wars combine to make the AR-15 the sporting rifle of today. A wide and diverse AR-15 market has emerged, targeting both high and low budgets. A rifle on the lower end of the budget spectrum is the affordable and capable Smith & Wesson M&P15 Sport II.

The M&P ("Military & Police") Sport 15 II is an entry-level AR-15, and for this article, we will discuss the M&P 15 Sport II Optic Ready with M-LOK Handguard. This rifle is an ideal beginner's rifle, which can be constantly updated as users continue to explore the world of AR-15 aftermarket parts and accessories. Rotate the barrel of the gun is set to use the most common cheap ammunition, and the weapon itself comes without a sight, allowing the user to choose one of literally hundreds of sights or guns.

The M&P 15, like most AR-15s, is chambered in 5.56/.223 and accepts standard M16/M4-style magazines. The gun uses a direct impingement operating system, which cycles part of the high pressure propellant gas through the tube running through the barrel, returning to the action of the weapon, pushing the bolt carrier group back and releasing the spent casing. When the group of operators bolt forward, remove a new round from the magazine and place it in the battery, leaving the remaining action for the user to fire the gun again to pull the trigger.
The M&P 15 is equipped with a sixteen-inch barrel, the minimum length for long guns that do not comply with the National Firearms Act. The barrel has Smith & Wesson's proprietary Armornite finish inside and out, to prevent rust and other forms of corrosion. The barrel is also threaded and fitted with a standard M16 type flash. Finally, the barrel includes a twist rate of one in nine inches, meaning that the twist rate completes one revolution of the nine-inch barrel. It is ideal for strengthening the 55-grain M193 bullet, usually the cheapest of the .223 / 5.56 bullet type.
The M&P 15 has many common AR-15 features. The upper receiver has a dust cover to prevent dirt and dust from entering the action, as well as a shell deflector. It also has an advanced help mechanism to remove malfunctions, although the reliability of the AR platform may exceed the point where it is no longer needed. The trigger guard is shortened to accommodate a gloved trigger finger, and the rifle is stocked with a standard A2-style pistol grip. Almost all parts can be changed out for improved versions, either by a gunsmith or a safety-minded user with the right tools.
The Smith & Wesson AR-15 entry may be for beginners, but the modular nature of the AR platform means it can scale as users purchase additional aftermarket parts. The optics-ready version of the rifle lacks not only the base of the front sight but the rear backup sight, instead of featuring a Picatinny-rail on the upper receiver. This allows easy installation of relatively cheap (or expensive) red or holographic dots, or aftermarket steel sights. The Magpul MOE handguard allows accessories, such as lasers, flashlights, sling rings, and bipods to be attached using the M-LOK mounting system for easy and secure attachment to the rifle.
