M4 Short Barrel - If I could only keep one airsoft gun that I currently own, it would be my Krytac Trident CRB. This is partly because I like the performance of this gun internally, and partly because it is a short barreled rifle (SBR). In my opinion, the SBR is the ultimate airsoft rifle, and of course many people agree with me because of their general popularity in the airsoft field, after all, you can't go to a single mils game without seeing the saturated field on the Mk18 Variants. However, one of the mistakes I see surprisingly regularly on airsoft forums, videos and social media is the idea that shorter barreled guns are dedicated CQB guns. I'm honestly surprised at how widespread this attitude is, and I'm here to argue why, while SBRs are great for CQB, they're good for a lot more than that.
SBRs are masters of flexibility and have all the best features you could want in an airgun, even accuracy. I know many people think airsoft guns with longer barrels are more accurate, but in practice, barrel length usually has little or no effect on range and accuracy. The most important factors are BB quality and weight, compression consistency, barrel bore quality and diameter, and how consistent and well-tuned the hook-up is. A few extra inches of barrel length will make very little, if any, difference in most rifles. As a result, an AEG M4 with a 10.5 inch barrel can often be more accurate than an AEG M4 with a 16 inch barrel. If you don't believe me, shoot a Krytac CRB alongside a JG M16 and you'll see what I mean.

However, any side effects is not an advantage, so let's talk about the clear advantages of a shorter barrel. The obvious is that the weapon could be shorter and lighter for easier handling. Cover work, cleaning doors, muzzle discipline in a stack, and keeping the gun in confined spaces are all easier with a shorter gun. When your average gate is about 32 inches wide, a few extra inches of clearance in your gun can make a difference in how you have to angle your body and gun to clear it, and when you're working that fatal funnel, you need every advantage you can get. can get A few extra degrees of not having to raise or lower your gun can mean accelerating the gun instead of breaking your weld, or maybe even keeping your eyes off the sight if you're first in the stack. I don't have to tell you why this is useful.

A smaller and lighter gun is also good for general field use because, let's face it, in most fields you will be carrying the gun a lot, especially in Milsim operations. You don't want to load yourself up with more crap than you'll need for your person or your primary weapon. A few extra inches of trim on your barrel and maybe a handguard can save you a few ounces, and if you're familiar with the saying "ounces make pounds, pounds make pounds," you'll know how an SBR can be an essential part of an easy Keith. If you combine this with a mostly polymer gun as well, you can end up saving a bunch of weight. This is especially useful for younger players or players of smaller stature. If you are looking for a gun for your child or perhaps your girlfriend, it may be a good idea to look at shorter guns that will be easier for them to use depending on their build.
The ease of transportation extends beyond the field. SBRs can fit into a wide variety of bags and cases, making transportation quite convenient compared to many of their bulkier counterparts. For example, a short-barreled AK with a folding stock can often fit in a backpack, which can even be useful for some undercover roles in an opera, if the scenario calls for it. Or, you can sometimes squeeze two shorter guns into a single gun case, which allows you to carry spare guns or share storage space with teammates when loading up for a road trip.
In summary, SBRs are very adequate when compared to longer rifles, and relegating them solely as CQB tools is doing the platform a disservice. The flexibility of a rifle with the firepower of a rifle should be self-explanatory, but in this article I have tried to highlight some of the advantages that you may not have thought of. I'm not saying you should ditch your full length rifle if you like your rifles longer. Some guys prefer more clearance, and some guys like the look of more guns, and a gun that looks cool is, let's be honest, part of the appeal of airsoft as a hobby. So shoot what you want, but keep in mind some of the advantages that different setups offer when building your gun, and don't be afraid to experiment with things that go against your preconceived notions. Carbines keep getting shorter and shorter. Short carbines have become quite common in the world of special operations forces. Special operations require short carbines for special purposes. As they reduce barrel length, they lose velocity and long-range capability. However, they still remain capable: in close combat, short carbines rule.
A short carbine maintains the capability of a rifle for close encounters. A carbine will always be better than something like an automatic. They offer significantly more power and penetration than a submachine gun and perform much better against armor and strong barriers. Short carbines have almost completely replaced SMGs as the close combat weapon of choice. The United States Army currently uses several different models, and we have collected them here for you.

The CQBR and MK18 series rifles are the OG of very reliable and stylish super short carbines. The Navy developed this platform for their top-tier warfighters, the SEALs, as well as VBSS teams, Navy EOD teams, and beyond. The MK18 uses a short 10.3-inch barrel, which refers to the Colt Commando series of rifles. 10.3 is the shortest barrel length for a 5.56 caliber AR series rifle. That said, the latest MK18 MOD 2 uses a slightly longer 11.5 inch barrel.
This shorty measures approximately 30 inches in total with the stock extended. It is short, light and sweet. The use of modern rail systems ensures that it is modular for all the accessories your modern commando needs. The MK18 served with units beyond the Navy and found a home in the general, special operations community. This small carbine is a simple solution and retains the same logistical components as a standard M4. Operators can swap the upper and make minor changes to make the gun the most capable possible.
The LVAW or Low Visibility Assault Weapon is built from the SIG MCX platform and has become the silent deterrent for America's most elite commandos. The SIG uses the 300 Blackout round, which allows shooters to swap between subsonic and supersonic rounds depending on the mission at hand. The LVAW was designed with suppressor use in mind and is as quiet as a suppressed 9mm handgun.
LVAW represents the power of short-stroke gas piston guns. The piston system ensures that reliability remains at the highest level with the short 6.75 inch barrel. Also, the loss of the AR 15s receiver extension allows for a collapsible stock for greater portability and use in and out of vehicles. This short carbine is a multi-mission weapon that excels in its range.

The GAU-5A ASDW puts the special in special weapons. This particular series of short carbines was developed to fit under the seat of a fighter jet as part of an evacuation kit. The GAU-5A uses an M4 platform with a short 12.5-inch barrel. The design uses a takedown system that allows the barrel to be separated from the receiver in about two seconds.
The GAU-5A features a collapsible and collapsible pistol grip. This little gun adds more firepower to the average fighter pilot and ensures that if they do evacuate, they are well armed and well prepared to fight. The GAU-5A features a free-floating barrel with an M-LOK handguard. It is very modern and very capable in its role.
When Delta Force (CAG), SEAL Team 6 (DEVGRU) and the Marine Corps needed a new rifle to replace the M4, they turned to the HK 416. The Marine Corps went with the carbine variant, but the more elite US it. Troops specific operations chose HK 416 D10RS. This short carbine uses the tried and true 10.4 inch barrel chambered in 5.56.
The gas piston system allows it to perform more reliably than AR variants with comparable barrel lengths. Although the system adds more weight, the platform remains a total of 6.7 pounds. It was the gun of choice for the bin Laden raid and the one that likely proved fatal
