Wiesbaden, Germany - Sgt. NCO Joy Higgins of the 66th Military Intelligence Brigade's order room, command and headquarters recently moved from the barracks to an apartment in Crestview. She said that she enjoys having her own place now and being able to relax and recharge after a hard day's work.

When her first sergeant mentioned the possibility of moving out of the barracks, Higgins said she was all for it. "They brought it up and I was like, 'When can I move?'"

According to U.S. Garrison Command Sergeant Wiesbaden, Wiesbaden is unique among garrisons in Europe because it has additional housing from its time as the former home of the 1st Armored Division. Major Christopher Trochon. He said providing apartments to service members in Grade E6 is a win-win for all.
"This allows middle-ranking senior non-commissioned officers, some of whom have served for more than a decade, to live in an environment commensurate with their seniority and level of experience," he said.
"I really feel like home," Higgins said. "I don't have to worry about any stress from the noise, and I feel like I can relax and skip the workday for a little bit—and kind of recuperate."
Higgins loves to cook and said one of her favorite things to do is cook for people, which she often does for neighbors in her new building.

The self-described woman said she felt the need to wash everything in the barracks kitchen before using it. "Here I know I've kept things clean; those are my dishes. I don't think I should take things down the hall to my room; it's all there."
And the extra storage space is nice too. She used to use a separate storage space from her barracks, "but now I have enough space here for all my stuff."
She also said that with Covid requirements she is much better off in a semi-locked apartment where she can go to a different room for a change of scenery.
Staff sergeants moving to Crestview also frees up space in the barracks, Trochon said, allowing the remaining residents to spread out a bit more and, hopefully, have a barracks room to themselves instead of sharing with a roommate. Additionally, service workers occupying homes that would otherwise be vacant put more eyes on the property.

"They can inform the Public Works Department about any problem or concern that arises inside the building," he said. "If the buildings are vacant, these problems may go unnoticed for a while."
Higgins said she is glad Garrison decided to do so and appreciates the improvement in her quality of life.
She said, "I think as we go through our careers, there are a lot of factors that make someone get out or stay in." "I think your experiences at different duty stations really factor into that, and simply doing something to ensure people have a better quality of life outside of work is one of the factors that really makes a decision maker for some people because they have a lot of control over our lives. . And that's fine, we signed up. That, but when we have leadership that cares enough to make sure we're good enough that they don't have to be, that says a lot."
